Budgeting is a trying exercise in the best of circumstances. If you’re just starting out, it can be downright terrifying. Budgeting is the process of laying out your total income against your total expenditures to create a comprehensive outline through which you can manage your spending. You are no longer in high school; car payments, rent, tuition, gas and groceries are all harsh realities. Budgeting is for everyone, rich and poor alike. In fact, budgeting will be that much easier in times of change if you do it all the time.
Budgeting is all about making sure that you have money left over after paying all your bills. You may want to think about putting spare money into a savings account (an emergency fund) to pay for unexpected expenses, or towards a major expense (for example, a holiday or the deposit on a new car). Budgeting is a valuable tool for business owners as well. It can be used to estimate future income and expenditures for a project of a business. Budgeting is a great way of allowing you to control your money instead of it controlling you. Setting up a budget can sometimes be frustrating and time consuming but there is hope if you stick to it and allow yourself to be flexible.
A budget can be handled during a family “budget committee meeting”, where both spouses sit down and have a say in the budget. The goal of the budget is to give every dollar coming in a name as to where it will be spent. Budgeting is never easy but it is something that is definitely worth the effort. The key to budgeting is sticking with your plans once you start. Budgeting is anticipating where your money will go, and prioritizing what is important and it’s different from being frugal and/or being cheap. You may also want to consider an “adult allowance” or “blow money” in your budget that you can take out in cash every month and be allowed to spend however you want — dinners out with friends, gadgets, books, coffee, etc. Budgeting is the most essential strategic tool you can use in setting and achieving your financial goals. Can you imagine a major business operating without a plan? Financial freedom cannot be achieved without budgeting at least to some extent.
