A certified public accountant is a person engaged in the practice of public accounting. Also known as a CPA, a certified public accountant is essentially a licensed accountant who has completed a certain level of accreditation and requirements. A certified public accountant is a title given to accountants in the United States who have sat for and passed the uniform certified public accountant examination and have the necessary education and experience requirements for licensure in a state.

Choosing a certified public accountant is an important decision. A certified public accountant is a valuable, perhaps critical part of your advisory team.  A certified public accountant is responsible for a number of activities, including providing accounting services, auditing services, consulting, and tax help to clients.

Throughout the year, you or your business can be responsible for a number of tax reporting requirements. This can be a stressful time for an individual or company if the expertise and knowledge of a certified public accountant is not enlisted.  One of the goals of a certified public accountant should be to make themselves readily available to their clients and help them make the best informed accounting & tax decisions.

You can feel safe that your information remains private and confidential. Except for some governmental and criminal matters, the information derived from or as the result of professional service received from a certified public accountant is confidential and privileged.

There are many CPAs who provide many different levels of service. You should pick one who is likely to provide you with a high degree of personal attention and customer service.  You should also pick one that can explain complex tax and accounting subjects in a way that is easy for you to understand.  Your CPA should have a good reputation in your community and the rates should be reasonable but not so high that you will receive substandard work because of the below market rates that you are paying.
